Cathy Wilkes’s installations employ found items in various stages of decay and fragility. Arranged in intricate tableaux that regularly include childish or female figures, Wilkes’s practice enacts an exercise in empathy, referring to popular beliefs on shared experiences while also insisting upon the private nature of artmaking. Her works often stem from an attempt to renegotiate relations between human beings and objects, triggering memories, fantasies and fears. As such, Wilkes creates spaces that comment on daily human experience while eschewing the framing typical to exhibition display in order to emphasize a direct interaction with her work.
