Kenneth Noland made his mark as a Color Field painter, emphasizing the optical effects of his geometric compositions. His painting consists of mostly lines and color bands that he arranged in square or rectangular canvases, although later in his career he would include other shapes and even irregular supports. Cool Yellow is one such example, with circular bands of several tonalities of yellow applied patchily to the canvas.
