The Jungle, 2003
Oil and encaustic on canvas on wood; pencil, watercolor and gouache on tracing paper
Variable dimensions
In this installation, Francis Alÿs alludes to the fantastical realm of the jungle, taking inspiration from the travel and landscape painters and etchers of the 19th century that explored unknown territories. Presenting the watercolor and gouache sketches as well as a triptych painting, the artist combines ideas and observations that speak of life and death, exuberance and decay, safety and hazard.
