Oil on slate paint on canvas
214 x 214 cm
Gary Simmons uses recognizable symbols of American popular culture in works that range from overt critiques of race and class to reflections on erasure achieved by smearing painted imagery by hand. Hypnotize is part of a series of paintings that smudge five–pointed stars drawn in white oil on gray slate paint, resulting in forms that look like shooting stars extending across the canvas and producing an effect that is indeed hypnotic.
