Ernesto Neto
Pé do Conhecimento [Foot of Knowledge], 1999
Lycra tube with polyamide cravus
Variable dimensions
This sculpture by Ernesto Neto corresponds to the moment when he begins to introduce the element of smell in his works. Beginning in 1996, Neto included aromatic and colorful spices in the appendages of his sculptures made of translucent stretch fabric. Suspended from several points but reaching to the floor, the sculptures allude to the human body and to the interconnectedness of all things. Some sculptures from this period were even meant for visitors to enter them and explore their tactility and fragrance.
