Salla Tykkä makes works in response to the films that have marked her. Lasso shows a woman arriving at a house that is locked, and through a window, she sees a man masterfully swinging a lasso bare-chested. After a few minutes, the woman retracts from the window, leaving the trace of her breath on the glass. The artist has said, “In Lasso, I approached westerns, which I adored in my youth, their black-and-white set of values reminding me of the society I lived in. I was touched by the questions these films raised about power and by what kind of roles women played in these films and how.” The music for this video is Ennio Morricone’s theme for Once Upon a Time in the West.
