Deeply spiritual, John McCracken developed a stringent body of work with small reinterpretations of his signature form. Merging painting and sculpture, McCracken’s “planks” are rectangular sculptural forms painted in bright or metallic colors that may stand or lean, simultaneously alluding to the Minimalist sculptures and monochromatic paintings produced by his contemporaries. In contrast with the usual smooth and perfect finishes which McCracken obtained by painting, sanding, and polishing, Untitled No. 1 leaves the wooden slats that form the work visible.
