Cyprien Gaillard’s video presents a landscape subject to an unnatural phenomenon. For his series titled Real Remnants of Fictive Wars, the artist set off fire extinguishers to create thick white smoke that appears slowly to obscure the landscape, which later reveals itself again as the cloud dissipates. Gaillard draws from art historical referents engaged with the land, from the sublime vistas of German Romanticist paintings to the monumental interventions of twentieth-century Land Art. In his film Real Remnants of Fictive Wars II, the smoke emerges from the opening of a railroad tunnel set between sheer rock walls, adding an element of mystery and foreboding.
