Darío Escobar investigates the displacement of images and objects from one context to another. In Kukulkán II, he merges the name and silhouette of the Mayan god with the symbol of soccer, suggesting the sport has replaced ancient deities and created the icons of contemporary culture. This work combines his interest in tracing the form of pre-Hispanic architecture (embodied in the feathered serpent), with his recurring use of soccer balls, an emblem of the consumer culture of global sport.
