Practices on pause: Mario García Torres in conversation with Anna Goetz, Sol Oosel and José de Sancristóbal

This discussion concludes a series of conversations that were part of the Solo project. Mario García Torres invites artists Sol Oolsel and José de Sancristóbal, and the curator Anna Goetz, to consider the impact of the pandemic in both, the artistic work and in the future of museums and art.

José de Sancristóbal

Lives and works in Monterrey, Mexico. Starting from intimate contexts, such as family history, domestic spaces, and everyday experiences, he mainly uses installation, photography, text, and performance to explore elusive and intangible qualities such as memory, sleep, distance, or time.

His work has been shown in Festival Internacional Santa Lucía, Monterrey; City Surfer Office, Praga; Centro de las Artes, Monterrey; Centro Cultural Plaza Fátima, Monterrey; Biquini Wax, Mexico City; FF projects, Monterrey; joségarcía ,mx, Mexico City; Glassbox, Paris; and Bienal UNAM de Artes Visuales, Mexico City. He is currently part of the Jóvenes Creadores 2019-2020 program from FONCA and sponsored by the Fulbright-García Robles program, generation 2021.

Anna Goetz

Curator and writer with a special interest in artistic strategies that challenge governing societal hierarchies, narratives, and structures. Recent projects as an independent curator include a solo exhibition with Banu Cennetoğlu at K21 Kunstsammlung NRW in Düsseldorf and the group show Stage Of Maneuvers as part of the International Curator Festival organized in Vienna (both 2019). She has initiated major group exhibitions, such as Where do we go from here? (2019), Casa Tomada(2018), both in Mexico City and co-curated the 13th Sculpture Triennial FOOD – Ecologies of the Everyday (2016) in Fellbach, Germany, together with Susanne Gaensheimer.

Her last institutional appointment was at MMK Museum for Modern Art Frankfurt (2013–2017), where she curated solo exhibitions by Ed Atkins, Laure Prouvost, Florian Hecker, Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc, Isa Genzken, and Subodh Gupta. Parallel to her curatorial practice, she has been writing for various international art magazines, such as Artforum, Frieze, and Mousse, teaching at various art academies and universities, and ran the project space Roberta in Frankfurt (2015-2017).

Sol Oosel

Artist, performer, sculptor, sonic landscaper, filmmaker and dancer. Sol lives and works between Mexico City and the rural village of Tepoztlan.
