Vik Muniz, who started his career as a sculptor, became recognized for his portraits and objects drawn directly with food, dirt, and even garbage. Muniz’s series Pictures of Dust reacts to the stillness of Minimalist sculpture by using dust to draw the volumes as installed in exhibition galleries. The artist contrasts the heavy nature of some materials used by Minimalists—like steel, iron, and other metals—with the impermanence, and implied weightlessness of dust.
