Mary Corse is now recognized as a significant figure associated with the Light and Space movement. Her multimaterial paintings are nearly monochromatic and abstract, playing with the interaction of light over the reflective surface achieved by glass microspheres embedded in the paint—such as that used to illuminate highway signs at night. As light is reflected from the surface of the canvas, the artist points to the role of perception in creating the work.
