Remake of the Weekend/Still Stills is composed of stills from Pipilotti Rist’s video Remake of the Weekend (1998). An homage to Jean-Luc Godard’s film Weekend, Rist poses a critique of modern bourgeois society which sees in the weekend a two-day respite from the otherwise bland existence of its everyday life, only to find, as in Godard’s version, a decadent end. Rist’s feminist appropriation remains opaque, while still offering some sense of female empowerment. The stills invite new narratives to emerge from the bright, colorful and suggestive images.
