Mariana Castillo Deball’s interest in science, archaeology, and the exchange of knowledge results in her work combining disciplines into installations and editorial projects. This piece revisits an episode in Mexico’s recent history, when a colossal stone from the small town of San Miguel Coatlinchán (often described as Tláloc) was forcefully removed from the mountain and taken to the Museo Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico City in 1964. This series of lithographs are presented in parallel with audio tracks referring to this event and to the mercantile trajectories of archeological pieces. Deball’s work questions the way certain histories and objects are archived and collected to become an ingrained part of our cultural identity.
