This book presents Daniel Montero’s research about art made in Mexico between 1988 and 2007. The initial question that sparked this project was very specific: What happened in the 1990s in Mexico that transformed the country’s artistic production from a way of making art that was called “neomexicanismo” [neo-mexicanism] to another related to the conceptual-art-object? But to understand why something occurs one must understand its circumstances. And it’s precisely these circumstances that Montero develops in this book. In order to comprehend the artworks produced in this period one must understand the context in which they were produced, not because these works cannot be read, but because in order to read them we must have access to vantage points, information that goes beyond aesthetic considerations.
This Academic Collection, published by Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, was created to promote critical thought and research about contemporary art.
