Frida Orupabo is an artist trained in sociology whose has worked in social services, a practice that has deeply influenced her art. Her influences include community service with sex workers, many of whom were from immigrant communities in Norway, and the writings of bell hooks, a prominent Black feminist scholar engaged with community and belonging. Orupabo’s artistic practice has developed through the use of simple physical and digital collage methods that draw on archival images cut together with the artist’s own image. They speak to the complexity and fragmentation of how a sense of self can be constructed, particularly for Black women. Turning consists of such an image which is printed to fill the space in which it is displayed yet whose resolution remains the same─the larger it becomes the more pixellated it appears which contributes to this critical and aesthetic investigation.
