The artist collective Claire Fontaine appropriate artworks and images from other artists and from the mass media, creating works that are conceptual and with a feminist critique. In this work, they superimpose the phrase ONE IS NO ONE over the printed face of Marilyn Monroe taken from Andy Warhol’s famous Marilyn from 1962. The pop artist’s diptych was made shortly after the actress’s death and was based on a publicity photograph made for the film Niagara.
