Headlands is a set of four photographs by Lee Mingwei, produced during his residency at the Headlands Art Center. Lee is known for works that engage the public differently through installations and performances that invite participation and conversation.

The Headlands’ photographs are distinct from this part of his practice, offering a view onto the artist ‘in retreat’. Their out-of-focus glimpse of moments captured without people at particular times is suggestive of a meandering loneliness, charting out the artist’s day. Lee describes his work as a mediation not only for the public but also for distinct schools of thought. Born in East Asia and living in New York, Lee draws on both Buddhist and Western modernist thinking, seeking a dialogue between the two distinct sense of self they evoke.
