Anne Collier is known for her appropriation of found images and printed ephemera, often from the 1970s and 80s. One of her recurrent subjects is the “woman with a camera.” This can be read as a symbol of empowerment and female independence, inverting the gaze that is traditionally directed towards women in order to interrogate the spectator. Paradoxically, Collier also points to its pervasiveness in film history, implying that women remained subjects of the male gaze.
