Set in an imagined future world where tourist sites have been closed off or rendered inaccessible, Huggonier’s narrative leads the viewer on a fictional expedition by hot air balloon. On a journey that marks the closing to the public of the alpine mountain, the Matterhorn, and juxtaposed against images of the Disneyland Matterhorn rollercoaster, The Last Tour reflects on the separation between experience and image of the natural landscape in contemporary culture. This piece is part of a trilogy of works by Hugonnier that enquire into the cultural, social, and political relations of humanity to the natural world, using the act of film-making itself as a means to critically address these issues.
