Paulo Nimer Pjota’s practice combines cultural references from seemingly incompatible times and movements. In his own words he relates “mundane objects with objects that are completely institutionalized” to make “it all uneven, with no present hierarchy”. In Expedition Sec.21, he places cartoon characters alongside references to Greek ceramics. Figures like Mickey Mouse appear not as innocent pop icons, but as symbols of colonial power—dressed in outfits that evoke countries once, and still, shaped by U.S. and European settlements. Through these unlikely combinations, Pjota challenges traditional hierarchies and the meanings we assign to images.
