Volute 2: Listen to the World is a suspended aluminum sculpture based on laser tomography recordings of the air turbulence produced when the phrase “Listen to the World” is spoken. The resulting form is unique and unrepeatable: even if the same person repeated the phrase moments later, the pattern expelled into the air would differ entirely due to the non-linearity of fluid dynamics. This fleeting trace of voice was captured as a 3D model and cast in aluminum, marking Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s first sculptural work. A tribute to Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer—who introduced the concept of the “soundscape” through his pioneering work in acoustic ecology—the piece gives material form to breath and speech. It also echoes pre-Hispanic Mexican codices, where “volutes”—cloud-like glyphs—visually represented spoken words and songs.
