ROTO SHAKU, 2015

Rotation is the act of moving around a center. More than a principle or law, it refers to a planetary system of the materials of everyday life. This series is inspired by the shaku, a standardized unit of measurement that is used in various parts of East Asia, based on the length of an extended thumb and forefinger. In Japan, it is still used in fields of everyday life, such as sewing and architecture. Orozco creates geometric forms by covering their surface with colored plastic-coated ribbons, wallpaper from his works and graphite drawings, emphasizing rotation as that which follows its own axis without beginning or end.
