Stefan Brüggemann’s self-referential works create contradictions that question the purpose, placement and function that we assume for artworks. His unique combination of theoretical concepts and pop imagery in What Colour layers cultural history with his iconic use of text statements as a way to question context and content. Brüggeman’s site-specific piece considers the white-walled gallery space precisely by asking what “other” color it should be painted, in an effort to reconsider established exhibition conventions.
