Stephen Dean’s practice is based on an investigation of color theory and the relation of color to transparency and light. Dean creates sculptures, drawings and videos that make use of the facility for color to produce meaning, with much more ease than language. In Account 233 he piles pocket books against a wall, playing with the tonal gradations of the colored edges and making us question its materiality. The works’ verticality refers back to minimalist sculptures.
