Hand sewn fabric and stuffed animals

Mike Kelley found and collected discarded tokens of childhood from thrift stores. Specifically searching for hand-crafted children’s stuffed toys that retain the maker’s hand and aesthetic. He then intervened the toys himself stripping the forms of their seemingly innocent and nostalgic associations. In Untitled, Kelley sewed two stuffed bunnies together creating a creature that could just be two headed and multi-limbed or he could be placing the toys into a sexual burlesque that debunks stuffed toys as symbols of youth and innocence. He constantly jumbled craft and art, to prove that the distinction itself had lost its meaning.
