JULIE MEHRETU: EVERYWHEN

The first solo museum exhibition of American artist Julie Mehretu (Addis Ababa, 1970) in Latin America, EveryWhen features a new body of work alongside pieces from the artist’s practice over the past 20 years. One of the most significant and acclaimed visual artists of the 21st century, Mehretu employs print, spray-paint, and gestural painting techniques. Her meticulously-constructed and densely-layered canvases unite references to present geo-political movements with prehistoric art, afro-futurism, and the immediacy of the painting itself. Exploring these temporal and embodied poetics, EveryWhen speaks to how the past continues to haunt the present and to the compression of time and space that is at the heart of Mehretu’s oeuvre.

The exhibition is curated by Kit Hammonds, Chief Curator, Museo Jumex. An accompanying catalogue, published in collaboration with Rizzoli Electa, features new writing inspired by Mehretu’s practice by Kit Hammonds, Brenda Lozano, and Jayna Brown.
